The Tenements & Home Comforts:

Glasgow, more than any Scottish city, is associated with the tenement. As land in the growing cities was at a premium, housing went upwards. In the second half of the 19th century, newly built tenements replaced the old slum 'back lands' and the more prosperous lived in 'two apartment' houses. Social historian Michael Donnelly explains what tenement life was like for his grandparents in a respectable 'single end'. He recalls his childhood memories of living in one.
