Islam started in the deserts of Arabia, but soon spread into large areas of north and east Africa and eastwards into India, China and south-east Asia. Later the Turks brought Islam to south-eastern Europe. Islam's holy cities include Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Throughout history pilgrims have traced the journey of Mohammed from Mecca to the city of Medina. In Medina, Mohammed first established the religion of Islam
