When were the first Olympic Games held?
The present-day Olympics are based on Games that were held long ago at Olympia, a sacred site in ancient Greece. The Olympic Games were first held in 776 b.c. The Games took place at four-yearly intervals until a.d. 393, when they were banned by the Romans. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
