What ships did the Romans build?
The Romans built merchant ships to carry food and other goods, and warships. The merchant ship was broad and deep so that it could carry thousands of containers of goods. The war galley was long and narrow so that it could travel fast and also turn quickly. It used oarsmen as well as sails, so it could move quickly even when there was no wind.
