Who were the Assyrians?
These were a people who built up a powerful empire from their homeland in Mesopotamia (now part of Iraq). They were enemies of the Hebrews from about 860 BC to 612 BC. The Assyrians were skilled in many areas of warfare. They used machines to capture fortified cities. The machines protected the soldiers while they knocked down the walls with battering rams. Other soldiers distracted the defenders by scaling the walls with long ladders.
