Why do birds have colourful feathers?
Most brightly coloured birds are males. Females of the same species may be duller. The males use their colours to attract a mate. Some species, such as the Raggiana bird of paradise, display their spectacular feathers by calling, jumping around or even hanging upside down from a branch. The female's dull plumage helps her hide from danger when she is hatching the eggs.
