How many kinds of goldfish are there?
Goldfish are related to the wild carp. The Chinese have bred carp in ponds for over 2,000 years. They probably picked out the red-and gold-coloured fish and kept them as pets. There are now more than 150 different varieties of goldfish and its close relative, the koi carp. The shubunkin is covered with grey, gold, red, or blue patches, with black markings. The common goldfish is very hardy and can live through very cold winters, even if the water ices over. Some goldfish have been bred to have special features. The lionhead has a swelling on top of its head. The veiltail has a long double tail which hangs down like a veil. Other varieties have bubbles on either side of the head, or scales that are almost invisible.
