How many people are there in the world?

More than 5,500 million people live on the Earth. By the end of the 20th century the population will have reached 6,500 million. Some places, such as deserts and polar regions, are largely unsuitable for people. Most people live where there is rich farmland or where cities can provide jobs and housing. The most populated country is China; it has over 1000 million people.
