How many different minerals are there?

There are about 3,000 different kinds of minerals on Earth. Each is made of a different set of chemicals. Some minerals, like those forming rocks, may be quite common. Others, such as gold, silver, and diamonds, are rare and precious. Minerals are used to make many things, from the lead inside pencils to the mercury inside thermometers.
