How does a farmer prepare soil for crops?
First, the farmer ploughs the land. The sharp ploughshares dig into the soil and turn it over. To break up the lumps of soil, the farmer pulls a sort of rake called a harrow, either with disks or with curved spikes, over the field. He may also crush the lumps with a heavy roller. At this stage, fertilisers are spread on the field to make the crops grow quickly. Then the field is ready for sowing.
