The atoms of different substances have different numbers of protons. Hydrogen has only one, but uranium has 92. All these protons jostle around, making uranium very unstable. If extra neutrons are fired into the atom's nucleus, they are absorbed. This splits the nucleus in two, releasing energy as heat, and extra neutrons.
