Why was the Statue of Liberty built?
The Statue of Liberty stands on an island at the entrance to New York Harbour. It was a gift from France to the USA in 1886 to celebrate the American Revolution. It is made of copper sheeting, and with its base stands 93.5 metres high. Its rusting iron skeleton was replaced by stainless steel in the 1980s.
