Birds can often be seen gliding in tight circles, being carried upward by rising columns of air called thermals. Ground heated by the Sun warms the air above it. The warm air rises, sucking cool air in below it. That, too, is warmed and rises up. Glider pilots use thermals. They circle and climb inside one thermal, then glide to the next.
