Why is the Hubble Telescope in space?
|
|
Light from distant stars passes through the Earth's atmosphere before it reaches a telescope on the ground. The swirling atmosphere makes the stars twinkle. Modern telescopes are usually built on top of mountains, where the atmosphere is thinner, to reduce this effect. The Hubble Space Telescope can see more clearly than any telescope on Earth because it is above the atmosphere.
